Working Together to Build A Community Of RespectForeword:
The world we live in is more multicultural than ever before. Communities that used to be homogenous are changing, and our shared experiences are very different than they were before. This can be an exciting and invigorating time for our community, or it can be a time filled with misunderstanding and apprehension. Accepting the changing face of our community and embracing its richness will allow us to remain at the forefront of cultural diversification. Our next step is to become more aware of the community around us through continued education and action. The simple act of knowing about—and respecting—the cultural observance or holy day of a neighbor becomes a way to transform mystery into understanding and anxiety into reassurance. Building on the Anti-Defamation League's successful No Place for Hate® program in schools, our newly expanded Community of Respect program will provide guidance, support and leadership to businesses, educational institutions, government entities, law enforcement agencies, media, sports and entertainment, nonprofit organizations and religious groups throughout the Southwest. This innovative program has been created to help communities and organizations work together to develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony among diverse groups. The Community of Respect program empowers communities to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. This resource guide is designed to provide schools, employers and employees, clergy, government officials, media representatives and other community leaders with simple tools that help build communities of respect. It offers creative approaches and ideas on how to create environments where prejudice and hatred are rejected and diversity is respected. You are encouraged to refer to this guide often, explore ways to implement some of the suggested activities, and to familiarize yourself with the different religious and cultural observances outlined here. Please share this guide with your family, friends, co-workers, teachers and clergy so that we all can work together to improve our world and our lives. Because the more respect you give others, the more respected you will become throughout your life. Contents:
