The Advanced Grammar Book, Second Edition Summary:By Jocelyn M. Steer, Karen A. Carlisi
The Advanced Grammar Book, 2/E is intended for the high level ESL student who has a solid foundation in the fundamentals of English grammar. This text provides the student with a sophisticated analysis of the grammatical structures of English and ample opportunity to practice using them, with the objective of increasing the student's competence in both conversational and written English. The text is designed for both pre-university and nonacademic students and includes a variety of exercises to develop oral and written competence, allowing the instructor to select those exercises that best suit the needs of the particular class. Summary: Poor choice for my advanced grammar students Rating: 1 I used this book in my Advanced Grammar and Writing course, and I was very disappointed. I especially disliked the practice exercises. They often included complicated structures that were irrelevant to the topic being practiced and that tended to distract students from the issue at hand. Also, the book seems quite out of date, and this affects the types of practice activities included. Summary: Don't waste your time on this book!!!Rating: 1 It's not helpful at all...lots of topics with so short details.
Rating: 1 This book covers a wide range of topics, but it does not go into detail in explaing them. The treatment of grammatical structures, especially tenses and conditionals, is broad but superficial, leaving out important cases, thus making the book of limited value for advanced students who require clarification of grammatical nuances, not a survey of topics. It is more suitable as an introductory text for beginning ESL students, as a foundation for further study. Summary: A Must-Have for ESL StudentsRating: 5 "The Advanced Grammar Book" should be on every advanced ESL student's bookshelf. Having seen numerous grammar books published in the US and Britain, I can with no doubt recommend this item. It contains very clear explanations of all complex grammatical structures in English and allows students to practice them thoroughly in context. Each of the 15 chapters revolves around a topic. New structures are introduced through a reading passage, followed by a careful explanation of the grammar points in the form of a chart and a number of exercises. The accompanying Workbook offers even more practice exercises. An additional strength of the book is the fact that the topics are very current and provide the students with the rather advanced vocabulary which is particularly helpful for ESL students preparing for the TOEFL and American college studies. Summary: Isn't that supposed to be "Advanced" Grammar?Rating: 1 I'm not certain to what the author suggests we should advance grammar, but I'm definitely unimpressed with the title.
