The Smarter Preschooler: Unlocking Your Child's Intellectual Potential
The Smarter Preschooler: Unlocking Your Child's Intellectual Potential Summary:By Renee Mosiman MA, Mike Mosiman
Arranged in a clear and accessible format, this guide presents the latest research on how to develop a child's intellect. Written to help parents create an enriched environment in and outside the home—the discussion breaks intelligence down into several capabilities, including critical thinking, problem solving, general knowledge, reading skills, vocabulary, oral comprehension, math skills, spatial ability, curiosity, and creativity. This guide encourages parents to actively engage their children and provides lists of toys, books, construction sets, card games, and props for pretend play to stimulate their minds, and a chapter about television and computer use is provided. The book also includes a discussion of preschools to help parents decide if an early formal education is best for their youngsters. Summary: Very Practical Rating: 5 As the mother of two young children I found this book was filled with practical ideas to help children reach their full potential while still developing a love of learning. It's not always easy to know when an environment is stimulating instead of suffocating and this book helped define some of those issues. It was filled with inexpensive and simple ideas that I believe will benefit my kids as they grow during these important preschool years. Summary: A Helpful GuideRating: 5 Reviewed by Kam Aures for RebeccasReads (8/09)
Having two young boys, I found "The Smarter Preschooler- Unlocking Your Child's Intellectual Potential" to be a very interesting read. "In a clear and accessible format, this book presents the latest quality research on developing a child's intellectual abilities. Then, based on co-author Renee's Masters of Counseling Psychology in Marriage and Family Therapy and her work with children in a clinical setting, combined with our first-hand knowledge from raising two children, we show you how to incorporate proven techniques into your daily routines." (p.6)
The book covers topics such as how your preschooler's mind develops, the impact of family relationships on intelligence, the importance of reading, how play is beneficial, and how to teach children in everyday routines and when you are on the go. There is a lot of useful advice given throughout the various sections of the book. We already had been following much of the advice that is given in the language section, but reading this book has inspired me to incorporate more of the "math language" into our daily lives. For instance, when I am cutting a sandwich I could use it as a learning opportunity by saying that I am cutting the sandwich into 4 pieces. Each piece is ¼ of the sandwich, etc. My children would really have fun with this, not to mention learn a thing or two!
I think that any parent and child would benefit in reading this book. "The Smarter Preschooler- Unlocking Your Child's Intellectual Potential" is a wonderful resource to help parents start their young child out on the right path and to help him to reach his full potential.
Rating: 5 The roots for a smart child should be planted early in life. "The Smarter Preschooler: Unlocking Your Child's Intellectual Potential" is a guide for parents who are stressing over giving their children all the benefits they need to make the most of their child's potential intelligence. With tips on valuable skills to learn, the power of readers, classical music, television, and much more, "The Smarter Preschooler" is a must for any who want their child to have a leg up on the world.
