Product Description:

When two gutsy moms ventured inside Nettelhorst, their neighborhood's underutilized and struggling public elementary school, the new principal asked what it would take for them to enroll their children. Stunned by her candor, they returned the next day armed with an extensive wish list. The principal read their list and said "Well, let's get started, girls! It's going to be a busy year . . . "

How to Walk to School is the story--from the highs to the lows--of motivated neighborhood parents galvanizing and then organizing an entire community to take a leap of faith, transforming a challenged urban school into one of Chicago's best, virtually overnight.

The fate of public education is not beyond our control. In How to Walk to School, Susan Kurland, Nettelhorst's new and entrepreneurial principal, and Jacqueline Edelberg, the neighborhood mom, provide an accessible and honest blueprint for reclaiming the great public schools our children deserve.

Summary: A great read and extremely helpful!

How to Walk to School: Blueprint for a Neighborhood Renaissance
This is a fascinating description of the rebirth of a school prompted by active, talented parents and a willing, cooperative principal. The descriptions of their ups and downs and the creative solutions are well written and just fun to experience. Not only is it a good read, but it is helpful for anyone working with schools--or any 501(c)(3) oraginzation!

Summary: how to congratulate yourself over nothing
Rating: 1

In a ritzy neighborhood of Chicago, parents get together and decide to send their kids to the local public school. Since the neighborhood kids now attend, there's no room for poor kids formerly bused in. Test scores rise along with the socioeconomic status of the students. The former principal pats herself on the back and writes, or gets a ghost to write, a book. What does that teach us? That people like to take credit where none is due.
