Summary: You cannot pass with this book alone.
Rating: 3

I would recommend for a newcomer to the pc technician realm. It lays the basic troubleshooting groundwork needed by a technician, but do not think you can pass the A+ with this book alone. You will also need to watch Mike Myers' video on the Osbourne website and purchase some practice exam questions. My main complaint was the multiple comments in the book about the A+ testing almost exclusively on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I did not find this to be true on the actual test. One example was the question: "A file 'user.da0' indicates what?" This is a Windows 9x registry backup file, and is not mentioned in the book at all.

Summary: Vague and poorly written
Rating: 1

I would recommend against this book. Having a bit of experience in the industry, the author still encourages bad habits such as calling things "NIC cards" and other redundant usage of acronyms that any person just getting into the industry will want to avoid. The explanations of the tools and technologies. are not by what they do and why they work, but are explained by usage, not giving a clear picture as to how they work together. The questions at the end of the chapters are also very vague, relying on you to memorize what the author said rather than rely on technical concepts. In short, this book assumes that you know zero about computers. If you're a kid just getting started, this book might be okay, but even then, like I said, it encourages bad use of acronyms and other questionable behavior by a technical person.

Summary: Best CompTIA A+ Book on market!!
Rating: 5

I was very weary of A+ certification exam study guides and initially thought the only way to study was to break apart the tower, and learn. This book proved otherwise. This is a no nonsense book that blends industry standards with "keep it simple stupid" tactics. I love how the book is set up and cannot understand why any college or university would opt out of using this book instead of ,with all due respect, the over complicated writings of Jean Andrews. The book gives definitions, examples, and highlights what you need to know in paragraph form. AWESOME BOOK!!!

Summary: Supplemental Study Guide
Rating: 5

This book will help as an aide to studying for the CompTIA A+ test. It will take awhile to read.

Summary: What is needed
Rating: 5

I've read a few A+ books recently and trying to find the right balance between too much unneeded information and not enough this books strikes that balance. It has the facts you need and if you need more information- you can easily find it online as well. The accompanying CD is more than adequate as well. If you're more than just basic PC literate I would definitely recommend this book for the tests as well as for better personal knowledge.
