Product Description:

Levinas and Lacan traces the similar concepts and logics of Jacques Lacan and Emmanuel Levinas, to explicitly render the rigorous questioning of the philosophic tradition undertaken by these thinkers, and to articulate the theoretical stakes and practical consequences of such a conjunction for ethics. In this book, contemporary philosophers examine this missed encounter between Levinas and Lacan by tracing their preoccupation with issues that emerge in late modernity: language, subjectivity, alterity, and ethics.

Summary: On not missing that which is missing Rating: 5

The missed encounter between Levinas and Lacan is still missing. As our fragile planet undergoes more and more globalization, we remain captives to an egoism that readily lends itself to the colonization of one another's humanity. In thinking globally with Emmanuel Levinas and acting locally with Jacques Lacan, our humanity needs to be glocalized. As we continue to otherize one another through our own egos, the ethical imperative of Levinas argues that we do otherwise, calling forth the psychoanalytical depths of Lacan. How do we re-cognize and ac-knowledge the otherness of one another ? The eight essays in this volume are a difficult read, presupposing a knowledge and understanding of not only the prior thought of others (a history of ideas), but also the thoughts of contemporary scholarship with which they were in dialogue. From the perspective of intellectual history, the first two chapters, by Tina Chanter on Hegel and Hans-Dieter Gondek on Descartes, are must reads. Personally I found the essay by Donna Brody, "Levinas and Lacan: Facing the Real," and, especially, for its clarity, the essay by Drucillia Cornell, "Rethinking the Beyond of the Real," most rewarding. Beginning with the thought of Lacan, that at birth we are thrust into a symbolic chain of signifiers out of which we develop imaginary worlds of our very own, we find it almost impossible to be really real. Noting that our first desires are the desires of others, to which we readily become unconscious, Lacan endeavors mightly to enable us to become consciously aware of the possibilities of choosing our own humanity. While Lacan begins with the origins of human desire in the otherness of others, Levinas begins otherwise, that out of which the ethical response emerges, also through the otherness of others. Thus the missed encounter of Levinas and Lacan consists of the reality that their thought co-exist at opposite ends of a single continuum. My own fascination with the thought Levinas and Lacan goes back to all that which led me in 1968 to writing a doctoral dissertation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, "Ideas of Individualism: a Twentieth Century Social Critique," anticipating that which I later learned had also intriqued Levinas and Lacan. From a somewhat different perspective, I developed a doubly dialectical methodology for an ideational analysis and synthesis of the diverse ways though which our own individuality and sociality both nurture and undermine the emergence of humanity. The missed encounter of Levinas and Lacan remains missing. We still find it very easy to otherize the otherness of others as enemy, rarely aware of the ways though which it might be otherwise, doing justice to both the sociality and individuality of our humanity.
