The fourth edition of Class R is a cumulative edition which incorporates additions and changes made between 1952 and December 1978. The cumulation was completed in twelve months and was made possible by the utilization of a videotype text processor. Lawrence Buzard, editor of classification, and Barry Bellinger and Susan Kable, assistant editors of classification, completed the cumulation by updating terminology, arranging notes and references to conform to current practice, deleting many parenthesized numbers, and creating a greater measure of consistency in the arrangement and wording of form captions. Advice and assistance from the Office of the Principal Subject Cataloger and from Lynn EI-Hoshy and Carol A. Lebo, subject catalogers in the field of medicine, also contributed to the content and to the successful completion of this edition.
