On January 6 and 7, 1969, a conference was held at the University of Essex on Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Algebraic Equations, organized by the Numerical Analysis Specialist Group of the British Computer Society. In this volume, we present all the papers given at that conference together with some additional material, namely a companion paper by Powell and a bibliography on the solution of systems of nonlinear algebraic equations. The adjective algebraic is, in a sense, a misnomer and is used to distinguish these equations from differential, integral, integro-difTerential and functional equations, whereas transcendental equations are also included in the category of algebraic equations for our purposes. In fact, the most common single nonlinear algebraic equation, namely the polynomial equation, was hardly even mentioned at the conference!
