DNA Binders and Related Subjects (Topics in Current Chemistry, Volume 253) Summary:By Michael J. Waring, Jonathan B. Chaires
The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage includes all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science.
The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether at the university or in industry, a comprehensive overview of an area where new insights are emerging that are of interest to a larger scientific audience.
Thus each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years should be presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. A description of the laboratory procedures involved is often useful to the reader. The coverage should not be exhaustive in data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Discussion of possible future research directions in the area is welcome. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. - Regulation of Gene Expression by Synthetic DNA-Binding Ligands - Structural Selectivity of Drug-Nucleic Acid Interactions Probed by Competition Dialysis - Cyanine Dye–DNA Interactions: Intercalation, Groove Binding, and Aggregation - Between Objectivity and Whim: Nucleic Acid Structural Biology - Topoisomerase Inhibitors of Marine Origin and Their Potential Use as Anticancer Agents - DNA Major Groove Binders: Triple Helix-Forming Oligonucleotides, Triple Helix-Specific DNA Ligands and Cleaving Agents - Aminoglycoside–Nucleic Acid Interactions: The Case for Neomycin - Ribosomal RNA Recognition by Aminoglycoside AntibioticsReviews: The editors have assembled an eclectic collection of articles that give a solid overview of the current state-of-the-art in small molecule-nucleic acid targeting....... As indicated by its general title, this latest contribution to the Topics in Current Chemistry series is not meant to be comprehensive. Rather, a variety of topics at the forefront of small molecule-nucleic acid biochemistry are discussed in great detail. This volume will be of considerable use both to researchers in the field and to those who wish to move into this exciting area. (Paul J.
