Oldfield, Kenneth, (editor). "Resilience: Queer Professors from the Working Class", State University of New York Press, 2008. Queer Scholars Write Amos Lassen
As an academic, when I saw this title I knew that this was a book that I had to review. It is collection of essays by queer scholars who have risen above working class backgrounds to find places in academia. Many are not aware of what goes on in the academic world and to those who come from a working class background, it can be overwhelming. Earning a graduate degree may seem like an insurmountable goal especially after coming face to face with the politics of academic institutions. Even the though of an undergraduate degree can be a very fearful thought. Not only do these students, in many cases, have to work to pay for their education, they are many times discriminated against because of from where they come as well as their sexual orientation.
In this book, thirteen professors and college administrators tells us about their struggles and marginalization as well as of their victories and accomplishments that they have reached and that their families and friends had thought unattainable. The book also allows us to empathize with what these scholars have been through. This is an extremely readable study and we are, once again, made familiar with oppression.
