Social Problems (13th Edition) (MySocKit Series) Summary:By William Kornblum, Joseph Julian
Written by a respected scholar in the field, this authoritative and very accessible text offers students a contemporary introduction to Social Problems by introducing the major trends and future outlook for each social problem. Social policies devised to address social problems--and their consequences--are examined in depth by presenting the key research conducted to examine, explain and alleviate today's social problems. The text takes the discussion of social problems one step further by looking at each problem from a global perspective and "big picture" view. Summary: Perfect Condition Rating: 5 Seller sent the book quickly and it was in absolutely perfect condition! Thank you so much, will buy again! Summary: SOCIAL PROBLEMSRating: 4 Item came not so fast, got the book the day of first quiz and I didn't have time to review the book. Shipper could have been a little more attentive, as she told me the latest I would get it was Friday and I got it Wednesday! Horrible Summary: Biased and lacking in substanceRating: 2 I was previously a Sociology major at a very well-respected private school and Social Problems was probably my favorite introductory course there. Since that time, I have taken a different direction in my education (and transferred schools) and have had to re-take a lot of my introductory courses, one of them being Social Problems. I was actually excited that I needed to re-take this course... until I started reading this textbook. I am shocked by the ridiculous biases in this text. Even though the author continually states that as sociologists, we can not make judgments on what is "right" or "wrong" (a statement I agree with), it seems as though he constantly is making those judgments! Although written in a way that is easy to understand, the reader is more often than not, easily understanding the author's point of view on a given topic. Reading this text, I feel like the "guts" of each issue are missing. Even though the author seems to try to represent multiple sides of an issue, it is SO easy to see where the author stands on each topic. There are things included in the text that do not need to be there and yet so much is lacking in actual substance. Furthermore, this text does not serve well for an introductory course on sociology as Social Problems typically is. There is very little sociological theory, the views of each social problem from different theories is included, but seems like a tiny party of each chapter (like maybe a brief paragraph out of a 40+ page chapter). There is a chapter at the beginning that goes over theory, but then those lessons are not fully incorporated into the rest of the text. In the end, this text may serve as an enjoyable read, but does not serve as a proper educational tool. Summary: Excellent salesRating: 5 Got the book in a very reasonable time and was in perfect condition. Would buy again from this seller!! Summary: Not bad, but expensive.Rating: 3 If you're buying this book, it's probably because it's a required textbook. As far as textbooks go this isn't bad. It's written in fairly easy to understand language and has a decent glossary at the end. It also has many color illustrations. That being said, it's still a paperback and a very expensive one at that. It was extremely frustrating as a relatively poor college student, being forced to pay so much for a book that the instructor barely used. My advice is to find a used copy if you can.
