Product Description:

Straight out of today s hospitals and labs and tomorrow s headlines comes a frightening, scalpel-sharp thriller from medical insider Joshua Spanogle. In an astounding debut, Spanogle takes us on an all-too-real race against time...as a young doctor enters the dark side of scientific research, desperate to stop a terrifying epidemic before it is too late.... In Baltimore s St. Raphael s Hospital, three newly admitted patients are among society s most helpless citizens: female residents of Baltimore s group homes for the mentally impaired, their bodies racked by a virus the likes of which no one at St. Raphael s has ever seen. Dr. Nathaniel McCormick is one of the first on the scene. A young investigator from the Centers for Disease Control, Nate is paid to explore the bizarre, the exotic, and the baffling from superviruses to bioterrorism. But as soon as Nate begins to investigate the lives and habits of the victims, he knows something is terribly wrong. Using all his skills as a medical detective, Nate soon zeroes in on the vector the one person who had sexual contact with the first victims. And when that suspect is found murdered, Nate fears that the disease he s chasing may not be an act of nature, but of man. With his brash style angering his superiors and fellow investigators alike, Nate turns to an old colleague and former lover, Dr. Brooke Michaels, for help. Together the two investigators follow a twisting trail of clues to a discovery that is at once groundbreaking and unspeakable. And as a circle of treachery tightens around him, Nate is about to confront the most chilling revelation of all and a past Nate himself has been trying to escape. At once a taut medical thriller and a riveting psychological portrait of a young doctor on the edge, Isolation Ward is a tale of runaway tension with a brilliant what-if premise that is harrowing...heartbreaking...and impossible to wrench from your imagination.

Summary: Outstanding!
Rating: 5

What an exciting book! I'm a fan of medical thrillers and this is one of the best I have read to date. Everything was logical and believable which I don't find in many of the books I read. Nathanial is an average kind of guy and not the `perfect' hero. One is entertained by his humor and worried about his outcome. Bravo Dr. Spanogle!

Summary: Uneven
Rating: 3

This work represents an excellent beginning by the writer who was student in medical chool when this book was written. The first portion of this work reminded me of readinf Michel Crichton. The wuting was crisp and the story moved along raridly with characters that were well deneloped. The story kept this reader coming back for more. Yet, in the last third of the work, a drastic change comes about. The smooth writing that had been a staple of the writer appears to disappear and is forsaken in the interest of moving the story along. It works on some levels, yet is reduced to mediocrity on many others. The writer takes a rather believable story and makes it extremely pat with characters that seem to drop in and out for the convenience of the plot. This is an interesting book, yet is nothing special.

this book was awesome. a tiny bit slow to start but it picks up quick. a must read for people who love corruption and medical mysteries. i really enjoyed it and have given the book to many friends who have also enjoyed it.

Summary: Sarcastic Witty Medical Thriller
Rating: 5

Dr Nathaniel McCormick has a biting sarcastic wit that makes this medical thriller a thrill to read. His "I attract sh..t" comment was an understatement. This medical mystery has as many turns as a roller coaster with your emotions with it. Outrage (who would target the mentally disabled), sorrow, hope, love, hate, envy all collide in the main character and in the reader.

Summary: Welcome to another great thriller author!
Rating: 4

Isolation Ward caught me on the first page. The book continued to present twists and storyline bumps on virtually every page. I felt the hero's frustration at every step. The medical descriptions were great. The story was plausible and believable. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was that I felt the writing was slightly disjointed in some places. I also felt that the storyline twists could have been meshed together a little better. The final explanation of the viral infection was a little bit weak. However, for a first book, this was an amazing read and I look forward to reading more of Spanogle's efforts.
