This volume also covers the JU-188 and later variants Summary: Junkers 88 Fighters! Rating: 4 Brian Filley wraps up his two-volume history of the Junkers 88 in this 1991 Squadron/Signal release. Part 2 covers the heavy fighter/intruder/night-fighter Ju 88 C, R and G models along with the follow-on Ju 188/288/388/488. Germany certainly got its money's worth from this aircraft! Grafting a solid nose equipped with machine guns and cannons on to an airframe already possessing high speed, long range and excellent handling characteristics produced a potent fighter. Whether intercepting Allied aircraft over the Bay of Biscay, shooting up RAF airfields during intruder ops over the British Isles or savaging Lancs, Halifaxes and Stirlings over Germany, the Ju 88 produced a combat record second to none. JUNKERS JU 88 IN ACTION, PART 2 tells the aircraft's story in a succinct yet interesting fashion, charting the development and combat history of the Ju 88C, G and R models along with that of the Ju 188 and the never-to-see-combat Ju 288, 388 and 488. Experimental tank-buster and Mistel composite aircraft experiments are covered as well. Given all that history, Squadron/Signal wisely added an extra eight pages to the book. Filley's book features over 90 photographs and color profiles and artwork from the always excellent Don Greer. Since the Ju 88 was a much modified aircraft, the many scrap views and three-views included in the book - some 48 in all - are especially useful. In short, JUNKERS JU 88 IN ACTION, PART 2 has it all: concise text; a wealth of illustrations; nice color artwork; and inexpensive price-tag.
