From 1933 the Reggiane work­shops formed part of the Caproni group. The Emilian firm started to dedicate itself to au­tonomous projects after having un­dertaken the construction under li­cence of the three engined Savoia-Marchetti Sm79 plane. In 1938 the technical department under the guidance of engineers Antonio Alessio and Roberto Longhi began the project for a sin­gle-seater fighter which led to the building of the Reggiane RE2000 "Falco" whose prototype, devel­oped from a 1,000 h.p. radial en­gine Piaggio, flew in May 1939.
