Because the format of the Detail & Scale Series requires a considerable number of detailed photographs of the featured aircraft, it has been particularly difficult to do books on World War II subjects. While it is relatively easy to gain access to present-day aircraft and take the many specific and detailed photographs that are required, obtain­ing such photographs of subjects which are no longer operational is far more difficult.
In 1987, The F6F Hellcat in Detail & Scale, became the first book in the Detail & Scale Series to feature a World War II fighter. This was followed in 1988 by The F4F Wildcat in Detail & Scale. Both of these titles were made possible because the Grumman History Center had maintained extensive files of detailed photographs for most of the aircraft the company had produced. Likewise, the titles on the B-17 and B-29 were made possible be­cause Boeing had maintained similar photo files.
