As opposed to other countries such as the Netherlands, access galleries in multi-story residential buildings were not particularly popular in Austria for a long time. Galleries or ‘Pawlatschen’, as they were called in pre-‘Gründerzeit’ Viennese housing, did indeed exist. But the romanticism they exude today makes it easy to forget that they also provided access to the water pipes and toilets and that the closed hallways of the Gründerzeit Bassena houses equipped with washing basins in every floor were more likely to be considered as an improvement. In later years, the disadvantages of access galleries continued to be the main subject of discussion – frozen access panels in the winter, the lack of intimacy, the risk of burglaries… Glass-clad access galleries seemed to be the only acceptable compromise. But access galleries have clear advantages: economic access (less staircases and elevators), apartments facing two directions, natural lighting – and not to be forgotten: the communication potential offered by the intersection between private and half-public space.
These areas offer the possibility of encounters that are not necessarily mandatory. Of course the way access galleries are (or can be) used depends on the residents’ attitude and most of all on their design. Does it allow for the residents’ initiative, does it stimulate them to participate in defining theses spaces and does it encourage different uses? In unseren Wohnbedürfnissen spiegelt sich auch der Zustand unserer Gesellschaft wider. So ist derzeit eine sehr große Bandbreite an Differenzierung in den Anforderungen an das Wohnen zu registrieren. Die Wohngemeinschaft, ursprünglich ein jugendliches Wohnmodell, gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung für ältere Personen. Doch auch der Trend zur Single-Wohnung ist ungebrochen, jedoch wird zugleich die räumliche Organisation sozialer Kontakte bewusst nachgefragt. Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen wie Werkstatt, Küche oder Gästeappartementsund informelle Treffpunkte wie Sauna und Garten werten einen Wohnungsbau ungemein auf. Hier kommt auch im Low-Budget Bereich der Erschließungsform im Wohnbau eine besondere Bedeutung zu. „Living Streets – Laubengänge" dokumentiertund analysiert Typenvarianten internationaler Beispiele der jüngeren Vergangenheit und stellt diese zur tieferen Verständlichkeit in den Kontext historischer Laubenhaustypen von 1920 bis 1970.
