Summary: More than maps! Wonderful resource for outsiders trying to learn about Carolina
Rating: 5

This book is a collection of short and well researched essays on North and South Carolina that I stumbled on by accident in a local book store. Though the cover looks something like an atlas or a workbook, everything inside is a delight and written with the kind of polish and insight that usually skips geography/history books! The chapters are from well regarded college professors throughout the region and are fairly short. I particularly enjoyed the sections on pre and post Civil War history/geography and on the economic history of the region - the latter is probably the dominant theme of this book. It would be a perfect read for anyone who emigrated to the Carolinas from another part of the country and wants to know more about the region.
