Introduction
Careers in Focus: Computer and Video Game Design describes a
variety of careers in the computer and video game industry—at game
companies, animation studios, law firms, marketing research firms,
advertising agencies, colleges and universities, recording studios,
retail stores, and publishing companies. These careers are as diverse
in nature as they are in their earnings and educational requirements.
Earnings range from minimum wage for entry-level software store
employees to $200,000 or more for intellectual property lawyers
and top designers and art directors. A few of these careers—such
as software store employees—require little formal education, but
are excellent starting points for a career in the industry. Other jobs,
such as sound workers and webmasters, require some postsecondary
training or an associate’s degree. Many positions in this industry
(such as artists and animators, computer programmers, and computer
and video game designers) require a minimum of a bachelor’s
degree. The career of intellectual property lawyer requires a law
degree. Game design professors at top schools typically have a master’s
degree or a doctorate.
According to the Entertainment Software Association, the U.S.
computer and video game industry had software sales of $9.5 billion
in 2007—an increase of more than 300 percent since 1996.
Two major trends in the industry are the growth of mobile and
online gaming. Mobile gaming allows users to play games on cell
phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and mobile game platforms
such as Nintendo DS. Approximately 44 percent of frequent
game players report that they played online games in 2004—an
increase of 12 percent since 2002. This popularity is a result
of improvements in online functionality of console games such
as PlayStation or Xbox and the emergence of multiplayer game
options in personal computer–based settings that allow gamers
from all over the world to compete against one another. As a result,
game industry professionals who specialize in these areas will have
excellent employment opportunities over the next decade. Overall,
the computer and video game industry is expected to grow faster
than the average over the next decade.
Computer and video games are also being used in corporate and
military training, education, health care, and other settings, according
to BusinessWeek. Employment in this industry sector should also
be strong. Table of Contents
